Minimum ages

Many rental companies set a minimum age of 21, and some 23 or 25 for certain countries or car types. A few rent to younger drivers in some places: in the US, New York and Michigan state law requires companies to rent to drivers aged 18 and over. Most companies also require you to have held a full licence for at least a year or two.

Young driver surcharges

Drivers under 25 usually pay a young driver surcharge, charged per day and often with a maximum per rental. You may also be limited to smaller car classes. Always enter the driver’s real age when you search: the price shown should then include the surcharge, so you can compare properly.

Older drivers

Most companies don’t have an upper age limit in the US or UK, but some do in certain countries, or ask drivers over 70 or 75 for extra documents such as a doctor’s letter. If you’re over 70, check the terms for the country you’re visiting.
