Picking up your car at Heathrow
Heathrow has four passenger terminals (2, 3, 4 and 5). Most rental companies run their Heathrow branches from depots just outside the airport, reached by a short courtesy shuttle from the terminals. Follow the car rental signs in arrivals and check your voucher for the exact pick-up point and shuttle stop.
Driving from Heathrow
The airport sits right by the M4 and M25, so it’s quick to head west towards Windsor, Oxford, Bath and Cornwall, or around London on the M25. Remember the UK drives on the left. Heathrow is inside London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ); most modern rental cars meet the standard, but check with the rental company. Driving into central London also means the daily Congestion Charge, which the driver pays, so many visitors leave the car outside the centre.
Tips for Heathrow car hire
- Allow time for the shuttle on the way back, as well as for refuelling near the airport.
- Automatic cars are less common in the UK than in the US. Book early if you need one.
- Check whether your rate includes the ULEZ-compliant car and any toll or charge admin fees.
