In-terminal or shuttle?

At some airports the rental counters are in or next to the terminal and the cars are in a nearby garage. At others, rental companies work from depots a short shuttle ride away. Both are normal: your booking confirmation says which applies, and where to meet the shuttle. If you have small children or lots of luggage, it’s worth checking before you book.

Airport fees and opening hours

Airport locations often include an airport or concession fee in the price. Check the counter’s opening hours if your flight lands late at night: if the desk is closed you may not be able to collect the car, and some companies charge an out-of-hours fee. Always add your flight number to the booking so the company knows if you’re delayed.

Searching by airport code

You can search by name (“Orlando Airport”) or by the three-letter airport code (“MCO”). Codes are the most reliable way to make sure the comparison sites pick the airport rather than a city-centre depot.

Frequently asked questions

Is airport car hire more expensive?
Often a little, because many airports charge rental companies a fee that is passed on in the price. The convenience can still be worth it, especially after a long flight. Compare with a nearby local depot to see the difference.
What if my flight is delayed?
Add your flight number when you book. Most airport counters hold the car for delayed flights, but policies vary, so check the terms and contact the company if you’ll be very late.
