Which van size do you need?

  • Small van (for example a Ford Transit Connect size): a few boxes, a single piece of furniture or a bike.
  • Medium van (Transit Custom size): a studio or one-bedroom flat.
  • Large van / Luton: a bigger home move. Luton vans have a box body and often a tail-lift.

In the US, rental brands offer cargo vans and pickup trucks, while larger moving trucks come from specialist truck rental companies.

Licence rules

In the UK, a standard car licence (category B) lets you drive vans up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass, which covers most hire vans. In the US, cargo vans and most moving trucks can be driven on an ordinary licence. Age rules are often stricter for vans than for cars, so check before you book.

Before you drive away

  • Check the van’s height before car parks and drive-throughs.
  • Photograph any existing damage, including the load area.
  • Ask whether mileage is limited: van hire often includes a set daily mileage.
