Who owns which brand?

  • Enterprise Mobility: Enterprise, National and Alamo.
  • Avis Budget Group: Avis and Budget (and Zipcar car sharing).
  • Hertz: Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty.
  • Sixt SE: SIXT, a German company with a large European network and a growing presence in the US.
  • Europcar Mobility Group: Europcar, plus low-cost brands in Europe.

In some countries brands are run by local franchise partners, so service and policies can differ from country to country.

Brand or broker?

Booking direct with a brand makes it easy to use loyalty programmes and deal with one company if plans change. Brokers such as Rentalcars.com or Discover Cars compare many suppliers at once, including local firms, and sometimes find lower prices. With a broker, your contract is still with the rental company at the desk, so read both sets of terms.

Frequently asked questions

Are Alamo, National and Enterprise the same company?
They’re separate brands owned by the same group, Enterprise Mobility. Prices, policies and loyalty programmes differ between them.
Is it better to book with a broker or direct?
Neither is always cheaper. Compare both: brokers search many suppliers at once, while brands may offer member rates and simpler changes.
